There are three types of legal aid that people often receive: legal information, legal advice and full representation. Legal information and advice can be very helpful, even if you are representing yourself in court or do not have to go to court. There are a number of options between legal advice and full representation. At the lower end, a brief legal consultation includes a short conversation with a lawyer. This can be done in person, over the phone or over the Internet. The Honor Roll, a joint project of MLSC and MSBA, recognizes financial institutions that go beyond legal requirements and pay favorable interest rates on lawyers` trust accounts. Your IOLTA account supports the main civil law services. The Whitman-Walker Health Legal Services Program provides free legal services to clients who are (i) Whitman-Walker`s medical or behavioural clients, or (ii) require assistance with legal issues related to HIV or the LGBTQ community, whether or not they receive other Whitman-Walker Health services. Please note that many legal service providers have changed their services due to COVID-19. Some physical offices are closed to the public, but many still offer services.

Each year, MLSC brings together Maryland`s legal services community to recognize individuals and organizations that have made significant contributions to the delivery of legal services and access to justice for low-income Marylanders. Lawyers regularly receive funds from clients that are held in trust for future use. For amounts that are small or intended to be held for a short period of time, lawyers place funds in an IOLTA account. Financial institutions send interest earned on IOLTA accounts to MLSC to fund civil law services. Ayuda provides immigration rights services for low-income immigrants and domestic violence, and family rights services for low-income immigrants who survive domestic violence, sexual assault, and harassment.
