The recently introduced training tax (an additional business tax of 0.5% to encourage large companies to hire apprentices) will also have played a role in companies` haste to introduce apprenticeships.
But there is no obligation for companies to hire interns, and many are sticking only to training contracts for now. As of April 2020, the national minimum wage for a trainee is currently £4.15 per hour for under-19s and those over 19 who are in their first year of apprenticeship. You must receive at least minimum wage for your age if you are an apprentice aged 19 and over and have completed your first year. However, employers in the legal services sector usually pay much more. More and more law firms are offering legal training as an alternative to traditional university studies. Apprenticeships are valued for their practical experience and combine practical experience with university studies. The paralegal pathway and higher learning in legal services does not qualify you to work as a lawyer, although after completing these trainings, it may be possible to undertake further study and training (such as legal training) to qualify for this role.
